The nationally-ranked GW men’s tennis team surged past George Mason this past Saturday, capturing a 6-1 victory over the Patriots.
The Colonials swept doubles play. Earning victories was GW’s No. 1 pair, junior Ulrik Thomsen and senior Alexander van Gils, defeating the Patriots’ Tanner Baine and Taylor Sargent 8-4.
GW’s No. 2 tandem of junior Nikita Fomin and freshman Danil Zelenkov also found success against George Mason’s Jimmy Davis and Scott Keaton, with a 9-7 win.
Coming off a No. 80 national ranking, the No. 3 pair of Francisco Dias and senior Leonardo Lapentti claimed an 8-5 win over the Patriots’ Christopher Borden and Jordan Dyke.
Trying to keep the momentum in singles, Fomin lost his first set to Dyke 2-6 but prevailed and dominated the next two sets, 6-1 and 10-7.
Ulrik, in the No. 5 spot, followed suit and helped Sargent to scoreless decisions 6-1, 6-0. Dias, Zelenkov and Van Gils all also captured singles wins to help cement the Colonials’ victory.
