The Student Association Senate passed a bill Monday again demanding that GW add student space and officially launching its 10-day-long campaign.
Most of the proposal focuses on renovating the third floor terrace of the Marvin Center and the lower floors of the soon-to-be-built superdorm to add meeting and study areas.
The bill blasted GW for investing $480 million on academic and residence space – citing construction of the science and engineering hall, the public health school and the superdorm – in recent years, compared to $17 million on renovations to common areas like Gelman Library and Marvin Center student offices.
The SA will hold a rally Thursday as a launching point for the issue, giving out free food for up to 1,600 people, Executive Vice President Abby Bergren said. Sandwich shop Jetties will provide free sandwiches, and organizations like Class Council will purchase pizza.
Sen. Ryan Counihan, SoB-U, drafted the resolution and said he planned to hand-deliver it to Rice Hall.
“It shows the administration that we’re not playing around anymore,” Counihan said about the efforts after the meeting.
Though the SA also promoted its senate meeting as a public forum to discuss space issues, no students showed up for public comment. The SA pitched the event on its Facebook and Twitter pages, promising free food for attendees.
As the meeting came to a close, Sen. Michael Morgan, ESIA-U, joked about the low turnout.
“I thought tonight was bring a friend to the SA meeting, not bring a friend to McFaddens night,” Morgan said.

The Hatchet incorrectly reported that the Student Association estimated its space proposal at $17 million. In fact, that figure referred to the cost of University projects already underway. We regret this error.
