There’s a new off-campus housing option on the market – but for a hefty price.
A University-owned penthouse, built by campus benefactor Melvin Gelman, was put on the market last week for nearly $2 million, the DCist reported Thursday.
The 8,500 square foot penthouse was donated by Gelman’s wife, Estelle, and is a part of a massive complex constructed in the 1960s. Formally known as “The Towers,” it was the largest of its kind in D.C. then, according to “Best Addresses: A Century of Washington’s Distinguished Apartment Houses.”
The $1.95 million price tag includes a two-story foyer, six bedrooms, two fireplaces, maid quarters, a large outdoor terrace and an entire room made of green velvet.
The penthouse has been taken off the market twice since being listed in 2010, according to the Redfin real estate site.
Estelle Gelman donated the property to the University after the death of her husband, an alumnus and an active contributor to GW, in 1980.
