Demanding tighter restrictions on guns, local activists have planned a March on Washington for Gun Control that they say will draw thousands to the National Mall.
The march, co-sponsored by One Million Moms for Gun Control, will take place Jan. 26. It will begin at the Capitol reflecting pool and end near the Washington Monument with a rally that includes a lineup of local and national politicians to be announced this week.
“We are a group of non-partisan concerned citizens… This is about common sense regulations, not taking away anyone’s rights to have a gun,” organizers wrote on the Facebook group.
In the wake of the Dec. 14 Sandy Hook tragedy, the group calls for a ban on assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines and stiffer requirements for background checks and gun safety training.
Molly Smith, the artistic director of D.C.’s Arena Stage, and Suzanne Blue Star Boy, an American Indian activist, are leading the effort.
