It’s been an eventful past few weeks in the world of collegiate sports. The dissolution of the Big East left seven schools without a conference to call home, prompting speculation that argued for both a stronger and weaker Atlantic 10.
After emerging as a strong contender from the first wave of conference realignment, A-10 commissioner Bernadette McGlade issued a statement this morning designed to calm the league’s fans about the recent changes.
“The Atlantic 10 is proud of and serious about our conference commitment to being the best Division I basketball-centric conference in the country,” she said. “Our focus and mission will not change going forward and we will continue to make decisions that enhance the strength and brand of this league.”
McGlade assured fans of the A-10 that the league is watching the realignment carefully, adding that it is important that the conference “stay focused on our current student-athletes and membership,” the upcoming A-10 action in men’s and women’s basketball and the “inaugural championship” at the Barclays Center.
In closing, McGlade offered thoughts on the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., calling it “of far greater importance” than conference realignment.
“Of far greater importance this holiday season is remembering those touched by tragedy, both young and old. We offer our support and prayers and ask that everyone within the A-10 family do the same,” McGlade said.
