The University Police Department identified a man who they believe has stolen seven electronic device thefts from campus buildings since Oct 31.
Officers reported that Courtland Thorton, described as a 6-foot, 175 pound black male, used a stolen GWorld card to enter buildings and steal unattended laptops and cell phones, according to a GW Safety and Security Alert. The thefts occurred in buildings like Gelman Library, the Law School and the School of Media and Public Affairs over the last week and a half, according to the UPD crime log.
University Police Chief Kevin Hay said the GWorld was recovered following a foot chase on Tuesday and that the case is under an “active investigation involving several agencies.”
The 20-year-old from Clinton, Md. was caught on surveillance camera entering “unsecured offices” to nab the items, according to the alert.
The alert also warned that Thorton may be working with a younger accomplice.
Hay said that surveillance images showed Thorton with a “young male companion who appeared to be fifteen or sixteen years of age,” adding that the last time the GWorld was used to access Gelman Library, an employee saw Thorton hand the card over to the younger suspect. They were confronted and then both fled the scene.
Electronic devices are the most commonly stolen items at the University. Gelman Library warned students earlier this month that laptop thefts are on the rise, posting signs to remind students not to leave their items unattended.
