The Student Association Senate confirmed three freshmen senators Monday, picked from a record 83-student applicant pool.
The number of freshmen applying for the non-voting Student Association Senate seats surged more than 50 percent from last fall, which counted 55 applicants. Applications have spiked more than 200 percent since 2009, which Executive Vice President Abby Bergren said demonstrates the SA’s growing appeal among incoming students.
Newly confirmed senators Benjamin Pryde, Ryan Moorman and Joy Dhar will serve on the finance, student life, and the academic affairs committees respectively. The SA also picked three freshmen committee aids.
Bergren said the SA upped its presence during Colonial Inauguration and Welcome Week, with SA Director of New Students Ari Massefski leading the efforts holding open houses and getting to know hundreds of freshmen.
Senators recognized Massefski – who called the uptick “very encouraging and a little surprisng” – at the meeting Monday for his work driving up interest among freshmen
