Senior Sarah Phillips is the Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Player of the Week and senior Heidi Penna is the Atlantic 10 Softball Pitcher of the Week, after two impressive weekend efforts from both Colonials.
Phillips helped GW clinch its first berth in the A-10 tournament since 2009 with a record-setting weekend of play, opening with six points at Duquesne Friday – a move that pushed her into the program’s top slot on the all-time career points list. Sunday, Phillips netted a season-high seven goals in the contest that secured GW’s postseason bid and tied the record for most points in a single season.
She holds 219 points in her career on 118 goals and a school record of 101 assists, and her 79 points this season ranks second in the A-10 and fifth in NCAA Division I. She also ranks second in the league and 10th in the country with 39 assists.
Penna earned her first career shutout over the weekend in Saturday’s 4-0 victory against Dayton. In her outings against the Flyers and La Salle this weekend, Penna went 2-0, allowing just one run in 14.2 innings of work to post a 0.48 ERA. She gave up just 10 hits, walking four, striking out 17 and holding batters to a .185 average at the plate.
Penna matched her career-high Thursday with nine strikeouts against La Salle and struck out six to clinch the Saturday victory against Dayton. She owns a 1.02 ERA in 27.1 innings pitched over her last six appearances, and has a 3-1 record and a 1.83 ERA for the season.
