ANC commissioners urge students to engage in community issues

Foggy Bottom and West End Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners encouraged a handful of students Thursday to become more active in local affairs.

Four commissioners on the advocacy group, which advises city agencies on issues including traffic, zoning, safety and liquor licenses, discussed campus development at 1957 E St. during a panel hosted by DC Students Speak.

Commission chair Florence Harmon said students and neighbors share a common issue: construction.

“Construction noise has been a problem, especially during finals. You’re paying a lot of tuition. You shouldn’t have to put up with that,” she said.

The discussion drew fewer than a handful of audience members, but DC Students Speak president Patrick Kennedy called it worthwhile because it centered on topics relevant to the student body.

“Having a student-specific discussion gave a perspective that they could relate to,” he said. “I hope students can take from this that they can be active participants and have an impact in what’s going on in their community. I hope they feel energized to take responsibility of issues.”
