Both the men’s club volleyball team and the club taekwondo team traveled to national competitions over the weekend, with the volleyball team grabbing fifth place overall and taekwondo placing three medalists on the podium.
The men’s club volleyball team advanced to the 2012 NCVF National Collegiate Club Volleyball Championships in Kansas City, Mo., for the fifth time in program history. The team, which was seeded 24th entering tournament play, competed at the Division I level and finished first in their pool, ahead of Rice, Creighton and the University of South Carolina. Next, GW advanced to the Championship pool, where they finished second, defeating Wake Forest and falling to Truman State. From there, the Colonials moved onto the Championship/Gold bracket, where they fell to Santa Rosa, wrapping competition in fifth place.
The club taekwondo team sent five athletes to the National Collegiate Taekwondo Championships in Cambridge, Mass. The Colonials returned three medalists: junior Duncan Galler, sophomore Michelle Caluag and junior Stephanie Caluag. Galler, a yellow belt, took bronze in color belt sparring. Michelle Caluag, a black belt, nabbed silver in the “Poomse,” or forms, event, and Stephanie Caluag, also a black belt, earned bronze in the same category.
