The softball team opened its home play this weekend, hosting five schools for the Colonial Classic. GW (2-9) played four games over the weekend, losing 6-5 to Buffalo and to Army, 5-4, and picking up two victories over Robert Morris and Siena.
In the first game of the Classic Friday, GW squared off against Buffalo, and found itself in a 4-1 deficit early, the sole run coming from sophomore Chelsea Lenhart. The Colonials came back in the bottom of the fifth, though, to take the lead, starting with a double from freshman Samantha Dos Santos. She scored when junior Autumn Taylor followed with a double of her own, and another Lenhart hit drove in two runs for a GW lead.
Both teams were held scoreless on the sixth, but Buffalo scored two runs in the seventh for the final 6-5 victory.
The second game Friday saw Army also take an early lead, up 3-0 after the second. Again, the Colonials came back to challenge the lead, tying it in the bottom of the third off a Taylor RBI double and a Lenhart RBI infield single. A double steal later in the inning brought the Colonials even with the Black Knights.
The fifth was scoreless, but Army again took the lead in the sixth off an RBI double. Taylor responded, hitting another RBI to tie the score at four before heavy rains suspended the game. Play picked up again Sunday, with Army scoring the winning run in the eighth inning.
GW picked up its first victory of the season Saturday, topping Robert Morris 2-1. The Colonials took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring senior Lauren Wilson off a double steal, and scored another run in the bottom of the third off another double steal. Senior pitcher Kara Clauss earned her first win of the season, pitching seven innings, striking out two and allowing four hits.
Clauss continued her dominant performance Sunday, pitching a five-hit shutout for GW’s 1-0 victory. Dos Santos drove in the only run of the game, driving in freshman Becca Garlinger.
The Colonials next host Towson at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
