It is expected that hot-button issues such as fees and student space will receive attention during the Student Association presidential campaign.
But one issue all candidates should champion is the mental health of the student body. Mental health counseling at GW has received some positive and negative news this year. The announcement of the CARE system was a step in the right direction to ensure that students receive proper professional help.
But the resignation of the counseling center’s director and associate director suggests continued instability in the University’s mental health services.
While we often focus on physical safety on campus, we should not forget how vital mental health is for students. SA presidential candidates should emphasize and lobby the administration about the importance of having top-notch and competently staffed mental health services on campus.
