RICHMOND, Va. – Junior forwards Dwayne Smith and David Pellom combined for 30 points as the men’s basketball team picked up its first conference win on the road this season.
Richmond’s Darien Brothers had a chance to win the game with a baseline three-pointer with four seconds left, but the ball bounced high off the rim and neither team could corral the rebound before time expired.
GW took its late lead with less than two minutes left when Pellom found senior forward Aaron Ware under the basket for an easy layup. GW made most of its free throws in the final minute to retain the lead – an area of the game that has plagued them at times this year.
Richmond’s Derrick Williams scored 21 points to lead the Spiders, but didn’t make many baskets late in a game that saw 16 lead changes. He made all 11 of his free throws.
The win takes GW to 4-7 in conference play and keeps them decisively ahead of Rhode Island and Fordham in their quest to make the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
