Senior guard Tony Taylor is among the candidates for the 2012 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday
The award, named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in college basketball. Taylor, a Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, is one of four A-10 players on the list, joined by Duquesne sophomore guard T.J. McConnell, La Salle sophomore guard Tyreek Duren, and Xavier senior guard Tu Holloway, and one of 65 total candidates.
The pool of candidates will be narrowed to 20 by Jan. 1, a top 10 by Feb. 1, and final five by March 1. A Selection Committee, appointed by the Hall of Fame, will review the final five candidates in contention for the nation’s top collegiate point guard award. The committee will be composed of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame’s Class Announcement on Championship Monday in New Orleans as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
Taylor currently leads GW in scoring, averaging 12.9 points per game, assists, averaging 4.7 per game, steals (1.7 per game) and minutes (34.8 per game), shooting 45 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range. Taylor ranks fifth in the A-10 in assists, eighth in the league in minutes played and ninth in three-point field goal percentage.
Taylor became the 43rd member of the program’s 1,000-point club when he posted a season-high 22-point effort in an 86-73 victory over Detroit on Nov. 21. Taylor’s efforts earned him the MVP titla of the Progressive CBE Classic Bowling Green Subregional, where he averaged 13 points and six assists while guiding the Colonials to three wins in three days. Taylor now rests at 38th on the Colonials’ career scoring list with 1,069 points and enters Thursday’s game against James Madison one assist shy of 400 for his career.
