The University is challenging student organizations to spend their winter breaks collecting phones for a chance to win up to $3,000 as part of the GW + Phones = Hope drive.
Campus groups that donate at least 100 phones by Feb. 17 will be entered in the contest with a prize pool of $7,000. The campus organization that brings in the most phones will take home $3,000. Groups in second place will earn $2,000 and the third place group will walk away with $1,000.
Winners will be announced at the George Washington Birthday Bonfire on Feb. 22.
“The power of the student organizations on this campus will be able to show what they can accomplish by participating in this competition for a great cause,” Tim Miller, associate dean of students, said.
GW’s phone drive kicked off Oct. 18 at a rally that featured Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The drive hopes to collect 20,000 phones by the Clinton Global Initiative University conference this March.
The University is working with the national nonprofit Hope Phones to collect phones to benefit maternal health programs in Democratic Republic of Congo and Nepal.
