Senior Yoni Berhanu earned Monday his second Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award of the season after a weekend where his commanding offensive efforts helped propel the Colonials to clinch a share of the A-10 regular season championship.

Berhanu scored three of GW’s four goals over its two victories this weekend, including the two game-winning scores, in the matches against St. Bonaventure, a 3-0 GW victory, and Duquesne, a 1-0 win. During play against the Bonnies, he converted both a game-winning penalty kick in the first half and a rebound of his own saved spot attempt in the second half to add two goals on the Colonials victory. Berhanu scored off another penalty kick against Duquesne, posting a 25-yard free kick into the right corner of the net to cement GW’s victory against the Dukes and sweep on the weekend.

The weekend wins marked GW’s fifth straight victory overall, fifth consecutive shutout at home and retiring head coach George Lidster’s 200th career win as Colonial. GW picked up its first Atlantic 10 regular-season title since the 1992 season.

Berhanu leads the Colonials and the A-10 with 10 goals and 0.59 goals per match and is second in the league with 23 points and 1.35 points per match.

GW (9-6-2) is the No. 2 seed for the upcoming A-10 Championship at Saint Louis University’s Robert R. Hermann Stadium, and have a bye through to the semifinal round. Play is scheduled to begin for GW on Nov. 11 at 8:30 p.m., where it will face the highest remaining seeded team to advance past Thursday’s quarterfinal action.
