Irene watch: Select University departments close early

Updated August 27 4:30 p.m.

Several departments allowed non-essential personnel to leave this afternoon in anticipation of Hurricane Irene, the worst effects of which are expected to be felt in the District tonight.

“A few departments are letting employees go, as appropriate,” University spokeswoman Michelle Sherrard said, noting that the decision to leave before normal closing time rested with each department.

No University-wide dismissal has been issued at this time, she added.

The Marvin Center sent some employees home at 2 p.m., as did Facilities Management after the majority of students moved into residence halls this morning, Sherrard confirmed.

Members of the GW Police Department ended their day shift at the normal time, 3:15 p.m., although those on evening shift began early to cope with increased traffic on campus due to move-in, Sherrard added.
