Incoming director of athletics Patrick Nero said Thursday the Colonials will take to the court against Loyola University Maryland next season in the Smith Center.
David Lubeski, director of GW Sports Information, said the final date and time for the match-up has yet to be determined.
“Finalized contract to play Loyola (md) mbb in the Smith Center,” Nero tweeted about the news earlier Thursday. “Want to play as many of the local teams as we can.”
The news is the latest addition to the men’s schedule and comes on the heels of the announcement of a game scheduled against the Bradley Braves for December 15. GW began to outline its out-of-conference schedule in April, including plans to open the season by playing in the CBE Classic and later host Virginia Commonwealth for the annual BB&T Classic. Earlier this month, the Colonials announced their conference match-ups for the upcoming season.
Loyola ended its season by falling to Saint Peter’s in the quarterfinal matchup of the 2011 Spark Energy Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Basketball Championship this March, finishing with a 15-15 overall record. The Greyhounds, lead by head coach Jimmy Patsos, finished fifth of ten in the MAAC.
GW will take the court under new leadership this season, as Mike Lonergan takes the helm after Karl Hobbs’ departure in April. The Colonials are coming off of their best season in the past four years after Hobbs led his team to a 17-14 overall record and a 10-6 mark in Atlantic 10 play, good enough for a tie for fourth place in the final conference standings. GW lost in the first round of the conference tournament to 12th seeded Saint Joseph’s, the second time in two years the Colonials qualified for the league tournament before falling in the first round.
