The University closed its main parking garage Friday in preparation for the structure’s demolition to make way for the Science and Engineering Complex.
The University Parking Garage permanently emptied and shuttered after 8 p.m. Friday, according to an Infomail. University spokeswoman Michelle Sherrard said Wednesday that officials expect the demolition process to last from June to September.
The $275 million complex – the most expensive building in GW history – will also sit in the place of Building K, a gym located on 23rd Street behind the JBKO residence hall. Sherrard said Building K will be knocked down between mid-June and early July. She added that all timelines are rough estimates and are subject to permit, weather or other construction issues.
The SEC project is pending a final approval from the D.C. Zoning Commission. The body proposed approving construction at an April 25 meeting and will have the opportunity to order a final approval after the National Capital Planning Commission’s 30-day window to review the proposal ends in early June.
Parkers received notices on their new space assignments in advance, according to the Infomail, and visitors and GW Hospital patients will be accommodated in the Marvin Center and Academic Center parking garages.
University officials have projected the SEC will be completed by 2014 and open for use the following year.
