UVM replaces Lonergan with GW grad

An alumnus and former assistant coach under newly hired GW men’s basketball coach Mike Lonergan, has been named the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Vermont.

John Becker served as assistant coach under Lonergan for three seasons at Vermont, and spent two seasons prior to that as the director of basketball operations for the Catamounts. UVM advanced to postseason play four times in his five years with the program, averaging 22.6 wins a season. The Catamounts won the America East Regular Season Championship and advanced to the National Invitation Tournament this past season.

Prior to Vermont, Becker served as the top assistant coach at Catholic University, helping guide the team to a 41-17 overall record and NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2005-06.

He earned a bachelor of arts in history from Catholic in 1990 and graduated from GW in 2001 with a master’s in information systems.
