University of Vermont men’s basketball head coach Mike Lonergan has been given permission to interview at GW for the head coaching position, the Burlington Free Press is reporting.
UVM athletic director Robert Corran told the Free Press he had been contacted by GW officials and gave them permission to meet with Lonergan regarding the coaching job, open after former Colonials head coach Karl Hobbs was let go yesterday.
Details have yet to emerge regarding when or where the meeting would take place.
Lonergan has ties to newly announced GW Athletic Director Patrick Nero, who served as Commissioner of the America East Conference, the league that counts UVM among its members. During his six season tenure at UVM, Lonergan is 126-68 (.649), and lead the Catamounts to the NCAA Tournament last year. He was named America East coach-of-the-year for the second time last month.
Lonergan won a NCAA Division III national championship at Catholic University in 2001. He was head coach at Catholic from 1992-2004, and then worked as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland before heading to UVM in 2005.
Originally from Bowie, Md., Lonergan graduated from Catholic in 1988.
