Students studying in Japan are accounted for, safe

The eight students studying abroad in Japan are safe and accounted for the University said Friday, after a 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the Pacific coast set off a massive tsunami that caused flooding and damage in the country.

The students – all who were studying south of the earthquake’s epicenter  – are “secure,” a release said.

“Our thoughts and concerns are with the Japanese people in the aftermath of this tragedy, especially our students from Japan and their families and friends,” President Steven Knapp said. “We are doing everything we can to ensure that our students on campus are receiving the appropriate support and have confirmed that our students in the country are safe.”

University officials reached out to the 30 Japanese students enrolled at GW to offer support and guidance.
