Former GW baseball standout Josh Wilkie, a right-handed relief pitcher, has been given an invitation to attend spring training with the Washington Nationals, the Nationals announced last Friday.
Wilkie, a 2006 graduate of GW, finished his career as a Colonial with a 25-12 record, making him the third-winningest pitcher in GW history. Wilkie had a career 2.97 earned-run average as a Colonials and ranks second overall in GW history for career strikeouts with 291.
After graduating, Wilkie signed as a non-drafted free agent in June of 2006. He first played in the Venezuelan Winter League, going 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA. In 2010, Wilkie completed his second season as a member of the bullpen for the class AAA Syracuse Chiefs of the International League, where he went 4-4 with a 2.45 ERA. Wilkie’s 62 strikeouts were the fourth most for the Chiefs last season, and his eight saves put him in third place in that category. For his career, Wilkie is 17-31 with 273 strikeouts, 31 saves and a 2.91 ERA.
Wilkie, along with the rest of the Nationals’ pitchers and catchers, will report to spring training in Viera, Fla., on Feb. 16.
