Men’s and women’s tennis picked to finish first and second in preseason poll

For the third consecutive season, the men’s tennis team is predicted to finish first in the A-10, while the women’s tennis team, coming off of its surprise run to the conference championships last season, is predicted to finish second in the A-10.

The men’s tennis team has been one of GW’s most consistently successful regular season teams, earning the top spot in the A-10 tournament in each of the last three seasons. The regular season success hasn’t translated into postseason victories though for the Colonials, who were upset in all three conference tournaments, most recently in the championship match last season against Xavier. GW will return all four of its all-conference selections from last season, including junior Ugur Atalay and senior Eric Hannah and Chris Kushma, all of whom were named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team last season. Senior Yan Levinski was named to the all-conference second team.

The women’s tennis team struggled for much of the regular season last year, earning the fifth seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Colonials seized their opportunity however, beating St. Bonaventure and Duquesne before topping Charlotte in the conference semi-finals to earn GW’s first trip to the conference championship match since 1997. The Colonials run ended there with a loss against Richmond, but it was enough to earn women’s tennis head coach Dawn Buth her first Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Award. GW will also return junior Jacqueline Corba and sophomore Mimi Hamling, both of whom were named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team last season, as well as sophomore Dorota Lysienia, who was an all-conference second team selection last year.
