D.C.’s pandas are here to stay…for at least five more years

President Hu Jintao’s state visit caused traffic delays and protests, but the Chinese officials accompanying Jintao did bring some good news to District residents: Mei Xiang and Tian Tian will stay at the National Zoo for at least five more years.

Zang Chunlin, secretary general of the China Wildlife Conservation Association, said the panda pair will stay until December 2015, in exchange for $2.5 million.

This gives Mei Xiang another five shots at giving birth to a panda cub in D.C. Panda’s can only get pregnant one day a year, and interested fans can follow Mei Xiang’s developments online.
