National Zoo opens cub-naming contest to the public

Christian the Lion? Lame. Simba or Mufasa? Cliché. Leo? Too astrological!

So what’s the perfect name for two cuddly lion cubs? The National Zoo is letting the public decide.

The zoo opened up a contest to name two of the seven brand new kings and queens of the jungle born last summer. Contestants should submit 90-second videos proposing names for one male cub and one girl cub, explaining the significance behind their ideas.

Complete rules and requirements for submission are online. In addition to naming two of the zoo’s new stars, contest winners will be invited to the cub’s first public debut later this year.

Entries are due by Dec, 8, and then the public has until Dec. 18 to vote for their favorites.
