The arch-conservative Westboro Baptist Church plans to demonstrate at GW Nov. 11, to protest the “God-hating heathens” they believe college-age students have become.
Nov. 11 is Veterans Day but according to the church’s website the protest is to “remind this nation that this next generation of young people have been raised for the devil himself.”
The Kansas-based group, known nationally for demonstrating at military funerals and for their “God Hates Fags” signs, drew ire from GW students in 2009 when they protested at the White House and other locations around D.C.
The GW Patriot – a non-partisan blog run by GW students – planned a counter protest against the Westboro group. Almost 300 people say they plan to attend the rally, according to the Facebook group promoting the event. The Patriot first broke the news about the Westboro Baptist Church protest.
“Take a stand against the WBC’s hateful and provocative protest. Join our peaceful, non-violent counter-protest to show WBC the meaning of sane, rational discourse,” the Patriot posted on Facebook.
Questions to a University spokesperson about the two protests were not answered Saturday afternoon.
