The GW volleyball team went 2-1 in the DC Challenge over the weekend, beating Georgetown three games to one Friday and splitting its games Saturday, falling to American 3-0 in its early game before topping George Mason 3-0 later that evening.
Against the Hoyas, sophomore Lauren Whyte set a career high with 21 kills in a game played at American’s Bender Arena. Senior Leah Hill led the Colonials (2-1) with 19 digs, followed by sophomore Candace Silva-Martin with 17 and Whyte, who had 12.
In the first of two games played at George Mason Saturday, GW struggled against an experienced American squad that featured five seniors in its starting six, getting swept by the Eagles 25-19, 32-30 and 26-24. Whyte once again led the Colonials with 17 kills and 11 digs.
GW fared better in the late game Saturday, sweeping George Mason on the Patriots’ home floor 28-26, 25-20 and 25-16. The Colonials came from behind in each of their three sets, overcoming deficits of three points in the first set, six points in the second and four points in the third.
GW placed second in the DC Challenge behind American, which had a 6-3 record in its sets compared to the Colonials’ 6-4 record.
Next up for the Colonials is a road date Sept. 3 against Liberty in the UVa Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament in Charlottesville, Va.
