Hatchet reporter Patrick Rochelle shares his latest musical obsessions.
The National: “Sorrow”
Hi, my name is Patrick. I’m a hater. Yes, it’s something I’ve struggled with my whole life. Yes, I have a problem with judging songs before I listen to them. And, yes, I’m working on it. Recently, I saw the light. It rang through me like a spark in the night, like a voice in the distance, like a love suddenly and very emotionally realized. Well, maybe not quite so dramatic. My advice: Don’t hate, appreciate. This song and The National’s new album, “High Violet,” is worth it.
There are two reasons why Joshua Radin fans should be excited. First, his new album, “The Rock and The Tide,” drops Oct. 12. And second, Radin plans to go on tour soon after, stopping at D.C.’s 9:30 Club Nov. 2. But if that’s not enough, his new EP “Songs Under a Streetlight” is worth checking out. So, for all you Joshua Radin fans burning with fever and desire: here, take this. It should help.
Lil Wayne (feat. Drake): “Right Above It”
I’m sorry, please correct me if I’m wrong, but last I heard, Weezy was in jail. As in behind bars, locked away, not allowed out until November. Oh, you know, the normal sentence for a self-subscribed gangster. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but how is he still releasing tracks while in jail? I realize I sound like an angry old man. Regardless, this song is impressive, a true recovery from Weezy’s most recent “Rebirth.” Now here’s a track worthy of that title.
