A fire caused by an underground transformer near the Willard Hotel evacuated both the Willard Hotel and the W Hotel and spewed flames into the air, D.C. fire spokesman Pete Piringer said.

The fire broke out around 7:45 p.m. in the 1400 block of F Street. As of 10 p.m., more than two dozen firefighters were still on scene but the D.C. fire department said neither building was damaged by the flames.

“We are still actively involved with a pretty significant fire from an underground transformer,” Piringer said to The Hatchet Saturday evening. “The flames have been shooting up on the building from the sidewalk.”

Piringer said fire officials fought significant flames that went as high as 30 feet in the air. There were scattered power outages in the area and a number of streets between 13th and 15th streets near F Street were closed off.

According to a message posted by the D.C. Fire Department around 9 p.m., Secret Service officials are blocking blocked off 15th Street. The D.C. Department of Transportation reported  at 9:30 p.m., almost two hours after the fire started, that 14th and 15th streets between E Street and New York Ave. are still blocked and E, F, G and H streets between 12th and 14th streets were also blocked.

No injuries were reported.
