What we’re listening to: Hatchet Arts music picks

Hatchet reporter Patrick Rochelle shares his latest musical obsessions.

This song is about a guy so desperate for someone’s love that he literally kills all of his competition and builds a garden with their bodies. Then, in an attempt to justify his actions, he sings, “So, I could stay the kind you see in your eyes babe.” Aside from the creepiness of the situation and the clear Bob Dylan influences, which some may find tiresome, “The Gardener” is an entertaining and catchy tale of what some will do for love (even if that means killing a bunch of better looking guys who might steal your gal). I don’t think I’m alone in thinking this is disturbing, but also wonderful in a non-creepy upbeat kind of way.

Florence + the Machine’s debut album “Lungs” led the UK charts for weeks after it dropped in 2009. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before some of this success started to trickle across the Atlantic. Florence describes a girl who “hid under corners and she hid under beds. She killed it with kisses and from it she fled” all to escape her impending happiness. But some happiness, success in this case, just can’t be thwarted. And what a wonderful thought that is.

The rap industry has for years revolved around New York and L.A., but D.C. and Maryland rapper Phil Adé has made it a point to change that. Adé’s newest album, “The Letterman”, dropped this past week adding a new voice to an already thriving but sometimes overlooked culture of rap and hip-hop within the District.
