During the summer, The Hatchet’s Fashionistas of the Week blog is taking on a new twist. As our writers travel, they will find the most fashionable students and share these students’ style secrets. They may not be GW students, but summer stylistas show how students interpret fashion in different cities.
Summer in the District poses some significant wardrobe challenges. Staying cool while looking cool requires a delicate balance of style and comfort. With college students from across the United States flocking to Washington for summer internships, each student displays his or her own style despite temperatures regularly hitting the nineties.
Abby, a junior at Michigan State University
For a casual lunch with friends, Abby wears a top from Urban Outfitters, white jeans from Rugby, J. Crew gold thong sandals, a white Michael Kors bag and a David Yurman bracelet. While she likes shopping at stores like Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and J. Crew for clothes, she saves her splurges for her accessories. When looking for tips on the latest trends, she turns to magazines like People and Style and says her celebrity fashion icon is Kate Hudson for her laid back yet put together look.
Emily, a sophomore at University of Mississippi
While hanging out at the Shops of Georgetown, Emily wears a wide range of pieces and designers. She has on a top from Anthropologie, shorts from J. Crew and Jack Rodger sandals. Her accessories are what make her outfit, though. She wears a Rebecca Minkoff side bag, a Michael Kors white ceramic watch and a Hadley Pollet headband. She says her style is girly casual, similar to that of Rachel Bilson. She shops everywhere from Anthropologie to Shopbop.com to consignment stores. Overall, she exudes a feminine yet casual style.
Jackie, a senior at GW
For her hostess gig, Jackie displays a polished look in a dress from Spain, a Forever 21 cardigan, shoes from Charlotte Rousse and a Francesco Biasia plum bag. She says she loves looking at magazines for new ideas, though she does not identify with any one type of style or celebrity. She describes herself as laid back with some hipster touches such as scarves and sunglasses. Her favorite places to shop include H&M, Urban Outfitters and Forever 21.
