During the summer, The Hatchet’s Fashionistas of the Week blog is taking on a new twist. As our writers travel, they will find the most fashionable students and share these students’ style secrets. They may not be GW students, but Summer Stylistas show how students interpret fashion in different cities.

The popular culture icons of Gossip Girl and Sex and the City continually influence style today. Based in New York City, these shows have changed the way the country views the city, and have sculpted the fashion trends found within it. Even in the sweltering heat seen in New York’s summer months, tourists and interns alike dress to impress, sporting a variety of trends unique to a city like the Big Apple.
Savanah, a senior at New York University
Dressed for a night out on the town, Savanah wears a black draped dress from Urban Outfitters, accompanied with Donald Pliner shoes—a label for which her friend designs. Although she was dressed up at the moment, Savanah likes to keep her clothing simple and said her style is influenced by Rachel Bilson. In order to channel her favorite former OC star, Savanah shops at Zara and H&M for cheap, stylish trends and also adores vintage stores.
Jamie, a junior at Tulane University
On her way back to her apartment, Jamie kept her outfit both fashionable and casual with a Splendid top and J. Crew shorts. Although she joked that she “doesn’t have any fashion inspirations, except maybe the J. Crew catalogue,” she explained that she admires the simplicity of the styles of Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon and Blake Lively. Aside from J. Crew, Bloomingdales is also one of her favorite go-to stores because it “has everything I could possibly want or need.”
Stephanie, a senior at New York University
Stephanie loves her labels. She doesn’t just inspire to look runway ready, she buys the actual designs. Her favorite designers include Helmet Lang, Rodarte, and Givenchy. Stephanie is also big on department stores, mentioning that New York City favorites Barney’s and Bergdorf Goodman are the perfect designer havens for the fashion savvy. Keeping up with designer trends, Stephanie wears a 3.1 Phillip Lim dress and a Helmet Lang sweater. The outfit is accessorized with a Miu Miu purse and L.A.M.B. shoes. Her sophisticated outfit is the perfect transition from a day at work to a night out.
