Correction appended
Following the death of sophomore Taylor Hubbard after he fell from a fifth story window in Guthridge Hall, the University announced it will install window restrictors in 19 high-rise residence halls across campus this summer, a University spokeswoman confirmed Thursday.
“That tragic death undoubtedly placed an immediate focus on the windows,” said University spokeswoman Candace Smith, who added that the installation of window restrictors “further enhances student safety.”
Smith said window restrictors – devices that restrict the amount a window can be opened – will be installed in all high-rise residence halls that do not currently have the safety devices: Guthridge, Crawford, Madison, Amsterdam Hall, the Dakota, FSK, Fulbright, JBKO, 2109 F Street, Munson, Schenley, West End, City Hall, Strong, International House, Building JJ, Lafayette, Somers and the Aston.
The addition of the new window restrictors “goes above and beyond” D.C. Fire Code, Smith said, adding that the installation of the safety devices will cost no more than $125,000.
The post was amended to say that the addition of the window restrictors goes above and beyond what is mandated by D.C. fire code. The University was not out of compliance with the code.
