After working out with the NBA’s Washington Wizards almost three weeks ago, former GW men’s basketball player Damian Hollis confirmed on Thursday that he has received an invitation to play for the Wizards’ NBA Summer League. It’s an invitation Hollis said he’d be excited to accept, if it’s real.
“It’s something like that. That’s what they said, but I mean, it’s a business so I’m not sure what exactly they have in mind,” Hollis said of his invitation from the D.C. NBA franchise. “I haven’t really got a letter or anything in paper form yet. All I have to go off of is their word… They said it, but I’m not sure if they’re actually gonna follow through.”
If he does end up playing in the Summer League, Hollis could be taking the court with another, more prominent NBA hopeful. The Wizards, who won the first pick in the NBA Draft Lottery last month, are expected to select Kentucky point guard John Wall. The prospect of playing alongside a number one overall pick, Hollis said, isn’t particularly exciting.
“I really don’t see [Wall] as the number one pick, I just see him as another player that’s just trying to make his way in the league and I feel like I’m doing the same thing, but I’m in lesser of a spot than he is,” Hollis said. “I’m over the little dream sequence of ‘oh I’m playing against this person’ or ‘oh I’m playing against that person.’ It’s just like they’re another player, they’re trying to get some money just like I am.”
The former Colonial forward, who has been working out on campus this summer and did not travel to Sacramento to work out with other NBA players and hopefuls as he had previously planned, said that the transition to the business side of professional basketball has been frustrating.
“I want to play in the NBA and I think I have what it takes to play there,” Hollis said. “I just need somebody to take that chance on me. It’s kind of unfortunate that it’s like that…I’ve never had to deal with politics or talking to people and asking for favors and stuff. That’s what it’s come to now.”
