GW all-time hits leader Tom Zebroski was named the 2010 Atlantic 10 player of the year on Tuesday after leading the conference in almost every offensive category. The Colonials’ senior shortstop led the A-10 in batting average (.429), hits (103), runs scored (75), home runs (18), total bases (176) and slugging percentage (.733) from the lead-off spot this past season. Zebroski, who surpassed former GW all-time hits record holder Mike Bassett’s total of 290 on May 15, was also named the A-10’s student-athlete of the year on Tuesday.
Also honored by the A-10 was junior pitcher Eric Cantrell, who was named to the A-10 First Team along with Zebroski after a stellar 2010 in which he led the conference in strikeouts with 114 and tied for the league lead in wins with eight. Cantrell’s 3.67 ERA was the third best in the A-10, and his 100.2 innings pitched were the third most in the conference.
Junior Brendon Kelliher earned all A-10 second-team honors after hitting .381 in 2010, the eighth best batting average in the conference and second best on the Colonials. The GW center fielder’s .688 slugging percentage was the third best in the A-10 and his home run total of 15 was fourth best in the conference.
Despite their individual accolades, Zebroski, Cantrell and Kelliher along with the rest of their GW teammates were left out of the A-10 conference tournament that begins this Wednesday. After getting out to a hot start by winning their first six conference games, the Colonials went 9-15 in its remaining conference games to finish just short of qualifying for the season-ending tournament. GW remained in contention up until the final weekend of the season, when it dropped two of three games to Rhode Island and were eliminated on the final Saturday of the season.
