Power was restored to the Mount Vernon Campus early Tuesday following a series of power outages Monday and Tuesday, according to a University Campus Advisory update Tuesday at around 1 p.m.
“Power has been restored to the Mount Vernon Campus,” University Spokeswoman Michelle Sherrard said in an e-mail this afternoon, directing all questions to Pepco for inquiries regarding the cause of the power outages.
Bob Hainey, manager of media relations for Pepco, said the outages were caused by problems with an underground feeder cable that developed during maintenance work on cables that service the Mount Vernon Campus area.
“They were doing some work on the cable and one of the cables developed a problem,” Hainey said. “The electricity that was fed to that area was underground and when you have a problem with one of the cables underground it takes a little longer to find the problem.”
Hainey said that approximately 1,400 Pepco customers near the Mount Vernon Campus lost power during the first outage yesterday sometime after noon, which was then restored at 4:45 p.m. Monday. Hainey said there were two other power outages since–one at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and another at 11:30 a.m., both restored within an hour of occurrence.
“Power has been restored,” Hainey said, noting that Pepco is still performing maintenance on the underground cables. “They are still over there working.”
