Beer? Check. Snacks? Check. Cups and pong balls? Check, check. Where else in Foggy Bottom can you find supplies for an entire night of partying, along with munchies and hangover food, all in one convenient place? The Foggy Bottom Grocery holds the answer.
FoBoGro customers can find a little bit of everything at the new campus establishment that offers groceries, beer (even on Sundays), wine, a humidified cigar case, a candy corner and a deli.
Partners and alumni Kris Hart and Devlin Keating (along with current student Daniel Blake) opened the deli to friends and members of the community last month during their employee training sessions. I ordered the Luther Rice Wrap ($6.99), with turkey, bacon, avocado, greens and ranch dressing. The sandwich was delivered in two minutes, and while the wrap was a little heavy, the contents inside were fresh, light, and savory.
Another sandwich I looked at was the Famous McDougall. It is basically your favorite hot wings on a bun served with grilled chicken breast and buffalo sauce, bleu cheese, pepper jack cheese and red onion on a sub roll. This sandwich will definitely fill you up.
A more traditional option is the chicken salad on ciabatta bread. Simpler can be better, which you see with this sandwich, served with walnuts, Craisins, tarragon and fresh greens. For the five-year-old in all of us, you can’t resist the P.B.J.B. complete with peanut butter, raspberry jam, sliced banana and granola on toasted white bread. The only thing missing from this taste of home is a tall glass of milk.
Though Hart said the store is still working out some kinks, I’m sure FoBoGro will not take long to become a GW institution. As I stood in the grocery ordering food I could here students whispering “this place is going to be amazing” and “I’m so excited.”
Word of advice: these sandwiches are for serious eaters. The bottom line is if you come hungry, you will leave happy.
The deli is now in full working order and a grand opening party is scheduled for April 23. Check out the Web site for online ordering.
