Every week The Hatchet will post an excerpt from its own “Bucket List” – things our staff thinks every student at GW should accomplish in the four years before they graduate. See if you can also cross them all off your list.
It’s Monday, and you’re probably back from spring break. But that doesn’t mean the fun is over. Take advantage of the newly warmed weather with these ideas.
19. Paddle Boat around the Tidal Basin
Only available March 15 through Labor Day, paddle boat rentals are a spring staple. Renting is simple. Take a stroll to the tidal basin located adjacent to the Jefferson Memorial and grab a blue and white boat. You can cool down cruising around the water and when the cherry blossoms are in bloom it will only add to the scenery. Rentals are $10 for a two-seater each hour.
20. Drive to Ocean City, Md. on a hot day
A trip to Ocean City qualifies as a necessary, pre-graduation road trip. The town is located three hours away along the Atlantic and is the quintessential touristy seaside town. Enjoy walking along the boardwalk or taking in the sun on the strip of beaches. Though mode of transportation is dependent on what is available to you, Zipcars are always a possibility.
21. Watch the Changing of the Guard at Arlington Cemetery
A Sentinel guards the Tomb of the Unknown Solider 24 hours a day every day of the year at Arlington Cemetery. The Changing of the Guard is an elaborate ceremony that takes place every hour on the hour at this tomb, where the Sentinel on duty is relieved. In the summer months, after April 1, the ceremony can be witnessed every half an hour as the cemetery hours are extended from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Though witnessing the ceremony might not be enough to tempt you to Arlington Cemetery, the place itself is worth a visit. While you’re there the Changing of the Guard shouldn’t be missed.
