Shooting at Pentagon Metro
The two officers injured outside the Pentagon Metrorail station were taken to GW Hospital Thursday night, along with the shooter, John Patrick Bedell. Last night Bedell, 36, was pronounced dead around 10 p.m. due to gunshot wounds, but the two Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA) officers he shot were treated and released from the hospital. The reason for Bedell’s actions is unknown, but his mental state has been questioned since more details about his past have emerged.
Metro announces Interim General Manager
With Metro General Manager John B. Catoe, Jr. scheduled to start his retirement April 2, Metro’s Board of Directors appointed an interim general manager Thursday. Richard Sarles will take the helm of a system grappling with many issues, including a large budget deficit and an investigation from the National Transportation Safety Board into the June 2009 Red Line collision of two Metrorail trains. Sarles most recently worked as executive director of New Jersey Transit. He is set to begin his Metro duties March 29.
D.C. gets federal aid for December snowstorm
On Wednesday, President Barack Obama declared the District’s Dec. 18-20 snowstorm a major disaster, making D.C. eligible to receive aid for the costs of the storm that dropped about a foot-and-a-half of snow on D.C. The city and nonprofits can use the funds to pay for costs of snow assistance and repairs. Assistance programs are described here. A decision on aid for February’s blizzards has not been announced.
