Electrical fire extinguished in Building K

An electrical fire in Building K caused the brief closure of 23rd Street Friday night, but University Police were able to control it before the fire department arrived on the scene.

D.C. Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer said the fire started around 6:30 p.m. and three or four fire stations responded.

“It was an electrical fire in an electric panel. The school security used fire extinguishers before we got there, controlled it,” Piringer said.

Piringer said it was smoky when firefighters arrived. The ladder of one fire truck was raised, but Piringer said it is standard procedure to put a ladder up. Piringer did not have information on what floor the fire occurred.

Located at 817 23rd St., Building K houses the exercise science department and includes a gym.

By 7 p.m. fire trucks had left and 23rd Street was clear. UPD officers remained outside the building.

UPD Chief Dolores Stafford could not be reached for comment.
