In the wake of the devastating earthquake that has decimated Haiti and has left an estimated 75,000 dead, University President Steven Knapp announced the formation of a Haitian Response Group to coordinate GW’s relief efforts.
The group – which will be comprised of senior level University administrators, as well as student leaders who have stepped up over the past week to coordinate relief efforts – will be led by Dr. John Williams, provost and vice president for health affairs.
“The group is still in formation, and its representatives will be announced soon,” said University spokeswoman Michelle Sherrard in an e-mail. “The working group that was formed in the immediate aftermath of the tragic earthquake continues its efforts to coordinate University-wide activities and will also be represented on this group.”
Knapp also took the time to speak at a candlelight vigil for Haiti – organized by the Caribbean Student Association – to praise the organization’s efforts in coordinating events to help collect money and resources to send to Haiti.
For students wishing to donate funds to Haiti, the CSA has teamed up with the University to launch a “Swipe Your GWorld for Haiti” event on Jan. 22.
Other events planned include a “Night at Sesto Senso” on Jan. 21 from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. Twenty percent of the $10 cover charge will go towards Haiti relief efforts. Sesto Senso is located at 1214 18th St. NW.
There will also be a fundraiser party for Haiti on Jan. 22 on the third floor of the Marvin Center from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.. There will be a $5 fee to enter, and all proceeds will go towards Haiti relief efforts.
