During their busiest time of the year, the Gelman Library is seeking to prevent illegal entry into the building by posting signs near the turnstiles in the library’s entryway advising against GWorld sharing.
Susan Morrissey, the entrance desk manager at Gelman, said the signs were posted to remind patrons that a valid GWorld card is necessary for entrance into the library, and others who do not have access must sign in at the building’s front desk.
“Several times per day we encounter patrons who attempt to swipe their GWorld cards at the turnstile to grant entry to friends,” Morrissey said in an e-mail. ” The majority of the time, the friend is a GW student who just didn’t have their card with them, or didn’t feel like pulling it out of their wallet. Part of the time, though, we do encounter patrons trying to use duplicitous tactics to swipe in others who are not eligible to enter.”
University Police Department Chief Dolores Stafford said despite two instance of disorderly conduct and three thefts in the library during the months of Nov. and Dec., the UPD did not have anything to do with the signs.
Morrissey said the policy not to allow others into the library without a GWorld is nothing new.
“Entrance staff have always had to watch the turnstiles to stop these situations from happening,” Morrissey said. “The signs have been placed at the turnstile to educate patrons as part of a long-term strategy for stopping this patron behavior.”
