The term “breadline” conjurs up thoughts of a less-than-appealing meal, but make no mistake: the Foggy Bottom lunch and breakfast spot of the same name offers fresh, tasty fare in generous proportions.
Although Breadline’s lunch line often reaches out the door, by early afternoon a wait shouldn’t be a problem. There is ample seating, with an upstairs eating area toward the back of the restaurant, and outdoor tables during the warmer months. The decoration is sparse, but clean: simple wooden tables and benches line the place, with black and white, WWII-era photos hung on the walls.
Breadline’s lunch menu is small, but is varied and updated daily. They offer twists on traditional sandwiches – their egg salad is served on thick slices of olive bread, and topped with fresh arugula. The various chicken sandwiches are spiced up with goatcheese, tomato jam and tangy guacamole. Vegetarian options include the standard grilled veggie sandwich, but they also have salads, falafel, plaintain-stuffed empanadas and fresh-cut fries. For the early risers, Breadline has breakfast: cinnamon brioche toast, homemade bagels and breakfast sandwiches are available from 7:30 a.m. Of course, Breadline’s specialty is the bread, and they sell fresh loaves of their baguettes, walnut and olive bread daily.
A meal from Breadline may leave you feeling full all day, and that’s a good thing: sandwiches (include breakfast ones) start at around $7.50, and lunch, along with a drink, can cost upwards of $10. While Breadline may be more wallet friendly for young government workers with disposable income than college students, it’s still a nice alternative to the regular options on GW’s campus.
Breadline is located at 1751 Pennsylvania Avenue and is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m
