Over the next two weeks, reusable shopping bags will be available for free at local CVS stores before a new D.C. law goes into effect that will put a 5 cent fee on plastic and paper bags.
Starting January 1, 2010 the new disposable bag fee will apply to District businesses that sell food or alcohol.
To raise awareness about the fee and to help consumers save money, this month the District Department of the Environment is teaming up with CVS/pharmacy to distribute 112,000 reusable bags to D.C. residents as part of the “Skip the Bag, Save the River” campaign.
Four of every 5 cents from each disposable bag consumers use will go to the Anacostia River Cleanup and Protection Fund, according to the law signed by Mayor Adrian Fenty over the summer. The other cent goes to the retailer.
You can pick up a free reusable bag at the following locations and times, according to DCist. The closest location to GW’s Foggy Bottom campus will be in Georgetown Dec. 14 at 1403 Wisconsin Ave. NW. Students on the Vern can try the CVS at 4859 MacArthur Blvd. NW on Dec. 15
