The GW women’s basketball team suffered its second big defeat in as many days this afternoon, losing 80-58 to Marist on the second day of the Junkanoo Jam on Grand Bahama Island.
Marist senior forward Rachele Fitz led the charge for the Red Foxes, making 11 of 12 shots from the field on her way to a 28-point, nine-rebound performance, while the Colonials (2-3) struggled shooting the ball for the second straight game, connecting on just 35 percent of their field goal attempts and made just four of 23 three-pointers.
Freshman Shi-Heria Shipp led GW in scoring once again, tallying 14 points on six-of-eight shooting and adding seven rebounds and a team-best six assists. Sophomore Sara Mostafa added a double-double effort with 12 points and 10 rebounds and classmate Kay-Kay Allums joined her in double figures with 10 points.
The Colonials were playing without freshman point guard Danni Jackson, who played just 11 minutes in yesterday’s loss before breaking her leg. Jackson had a team-best 20 assists through the first three games of the season and had only turned the ball over seven times.
GW will next head to No. 6/5 Tennessee (AP, ESPN/USA Today) Tuesday, with the opening tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
