Update, Oct. 13
Executive Director of the Student Activities Center Tim Miller said in an e-mail that the decals were placed to mark the Fishbowl as a GW building.
“The ‘window clings’ on the outside of the Fishbowl lounge were designed in order to identify the space as a GW building as well as make it stand out more as a place for students to gather to study alone or in a group, eat a meal, watch TV or a movie, play the Wii or a board game or just relax,” Miller said. “The Student Association identified a need for more student gathering space a few years ago and the Fishbowl (first named this by the GW Hatchet) has worked to fill this niche.”
A chalkboard outside the building lets students know what programming is available that night–from the game schedule for Sunday Night Football to a cupcake-themed party for the Gossip Girl television show premiere. Miller said students should expect theĀ creative events to continue throughout the year.
“We hope that this new design will make even more students come by the Fishbowl from now on,” Miller said.

The student lounge at 2145 G Street has officially been dubbed “The Fishbowl” with the addition of several blue, aquatic-themed window decals.
About half of each window is now covered with a decal, possibly to make students feel more comfortable studying and hanging out in the building. The Fishbowl was unofficially named for its large windows, which prompted students inside to say they feel exposed on the busy corner of 22nd and G streets.
“It might be a bit of a fishbowl to study in, with all the windows on the corner, but the lounge is a great step in the right direction for student space,” the Hatchet Editorial Board wrote last October.
Student and Academic Support Services administrators, who announced the plans for the space formerly occupied by DJ’s Fastbreak restaurant, did not immediately return requests for comment.
