The Kalb Report will kick off its 16th season this October with a panel of distinguished print-media guests, brought together to discuss the future of print journalism.
Marvin Kalb, a former corespondent for CBS and NBC News, will moderate “Ink on the Brink: The Future of Print Journalism.”
“The future of print journalism suggests optimistically that there will be a future,” said Kalb. “But what will it look like? Will there really be newspapers? Or will everything be online? I want to believe there will be newspapers, the kind we read at breakfast, and I am looking to our distinguished panel to confirm my faith.”
Pulitzer Prize-winning Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Cynthia Tucker, Washington Post Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli, USA Today President and Publisher David Hunke, and International Herald Tribune Senior Editor Anne Bagamery will join Kalb to discuss the face of print journalism after budget cuts, blogging and Twitter.
“We are very excited to have this caliber of guests appear on the Kalb Report,” Michael Freedman, executive producer and director of GW’s Global Media Institute said. “It will be great for students to hear from four leaders in the field.”
In an era where citizen journalists and twitter have been cited as sources in news stories, Freedman thinks this panel will teach students about “ethics, technology, history and democracy,” and what real journalism is and is not.
“A tweet is not journalism,” Freedman said.
The event will be Oct. 5, at 8 p.m. in the main ballroom of the National Press Club. Admission is free for students and you can request tickets here.
