With help from GW’s founding father, J Street Café is getting some work done over break.
The renovation project, which began with a paint job in December, should be completed by the time students return from spring break, said Nancy Haaga, managing director of Campus Support Services. University officials hope the renovation makes J Street Café a more visually appealing place to eat.
“Over winter break we painted; selected colors that set the whole space off, that was phase one,” Haaga said. “Phase two is to give the venue its own identity. We worked with Campus Creative Services to come up a theme, which will be centered on eating healthy, good nutrition, fresh foods and variety. Words the describe what the J Street Café provides.”
But what does George Washington have to do with it? Washington, a farmer himself, wrote about the power of healthy food, and posters of his words will be included in the new design. The independent company that drafted the new look found the Washington quotes.
Also included in the physical makeover will be explanatory signs on the buffet bars and lights to brighten the space. Additional local and organic food will also be added to the venue. The University and Sodexo, the dining management company that runs J Street, will be sharing the cost for the renovations, Haaga said.
