University Police Department officers escorted a badly burned homeless woman to the GW Hospital Monday morning after she wandered onto campus, UPD Chief Dolores Stafford said Tuesday.
Officers found the woman – who was disoriented and not wearing a shirt – in the 2100 block of H Street early Monday morning, Stafford said. They took the woman to the GW emergency room, where the officers realized that she was severely burned on her face and neck.
The woman did not have an address and was presumed homeless, University spokeswoman Michelle Sherrard said.
Stafford said the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the incident, but MPD declined to comment. Local FOX Network affiliate WTTG reported that the woman was transferred to Washington Hospital Center Monday.
FOX also reported that Secret Service agents spotted the woman near the White House about an hour before UPD officers found her at GW. She reportedly refused medical treatment and left the scene before EMS arrived. The agents did not pursue her. The Secret Service did not return requests for comment.
